The Catalina Island Conservancy states "The plan will be conducted with the highest standards of safety and humane practice". However, on their application of their new permit with CDFW under "Department of Authorizations Sought" it states "Bait; Firearm (e.g. Centerfire Rifle/Shotgun); Gun, Airgun (e.g. Rifle, Pistol); Drop Net; SpotLighting/Night-Lighting" and dogs are the methods that will be used.
The Catalina Island Conservancy's current plan with drop nets from the ground and from a helicopter cause extreme stress, panic, and immobilization, often leading to physical injury like broken bones, lacerations, or, in some cases, death from "capture myopathy" due to severe overexertion. see video below
The company White Buffalo which the Conservancy has hired will be using the following methods outside and within Avalon city limits "Deer are shot over bait, utilizing large 40' x 40' or 60' x 60' drop nets to capture deer", followed by euthanasia with a captive bolt gun. and have been known to use guns with sound suppressors (silencers) to minimize disturbance.
Below is a video of one of the "inhumane" methods the Catalina Island Conservancy and White Buffalo will be using.
On a hunters Facebook post it stated the hunter had shot the deer with a bolt gun and "tracked blood for about 200 yards".
